- Introduction
- In any given year, you can expect at least one Galaxy to appear on Stuff’s best smartphones lists. The honour usually goes to the Ultra variant, but 2024 might be a little different. A few notable upgrades mean the Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus isn’t just an oversized alternative to the vanilla model – it’s potentially the best of the bunch.
- Faster charging and superior screen tech join the usual list of improvements, including a bigger battery and more powerful CPU. Artificial intelligence is also heavily on board for the first time, and impressively Samsung has even managed to lower the price compared to last year. It’s not all sunshine and roses, though. European handsets get Exynos silicon, and the camera hardware hasn’t changed at all.
- Main Camera review :
- Stop me if this hardware sounds familiar. A 50MP main snapper with f/1.8 aperture lens, dual pixel autofocus and OIS; a 10MP telephoto good for 3x optical zoom; and an ultrawide with f/2.2 lens. That’s right, the Galaxy S24 Plus uses the same three cameras as the S22 Plus did two years ago.
- The hands-on demo area had limited opportunities to test the sensors, but my sample shots are exactly as vivid as I would expect from a Samsung phone. If you’re a fan of the firm’s image treatment, you’ll likely be very happy here.
- I was more impressed with the Galaxy S24 Plus’ new generative AI editing abilities. Did you crop in too tightly on your subject? Just expand the frame and let AI fill in the gaps. Not a fan of an errant coffee cup or background object? Just tap to select it, then move or delete it. Admittedly the phone wanted to replace objects with new ones it had created on the fly rather than delete them altogether – something the Google Pixel 8 Pro‘s AI editor seemed to have an easier job with. Either way, your picture’s metadata gets updated with an ‘edited with AI’ flag.
- Performance And battery life
- The Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus will land in Europe with an Exynos 2400 For Galaxy chipset and 12GB of RAM. The latter is a step up from last year’s S23 Plus, which made do with the same 8GB as the base S23; at the moment, I don’t know if the former is progress or a backwards step.
- That’s because all three S23 models shipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon CPUs, no matter where you were in the world. At the time, Samsung’s home-grown silicon was less powerful and less power efficient. Leaked benchmarks suggest the Exynos 2400 hasn’t entirely made up the performance deficit to Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, so it seems like Europeans are getting the short end of the stick.
- Calling it Exynos “For Galaxy” is a laugh, too. Snapdragon For Galaxy runs faster than the off-the-shelf version used by many rivals, but I don’t see any phone makers queuing up to use Samsung’s silicon in their handsets.
- I wasn’t able to run benchmark apps on the S24 Plus during my hands-on session, but happily the phone felt as speedy and responsive as I’d expect from a top-tier handset. Apps opened quickly, multitasking was a breeze, and the generative AI features felt snappy as well. Gaming should be equally impressive, with ray tracing available for titles that support it.
- The Plus variant always had an edge over the standard Galaxy when it came to battery capacity, and that’s still true here. The S24 Plus has a 4900mAh cell – up from 4700mAh on the S23 Plus and considerably bigger than the vanilla S24’s 4000mAh battery. More importantly, this year’s Plus benefits from faster charging speeds. It can now manage 45W over USB-C, compared to 25W on the regular S24. You’ll still need to supply your own power brick, though, as Samsung doesn’t put one in the box.
- As for how long the phone will last away from the mains? That will have to wait for a full review. Last year I managed all-day use out of the S23 Plus, so I would expect something similar here.
- Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus initial verdict
- Samsung’s Plus variants used to be head-scratchers. They were bigger than the base Galaxy, sure, with a larger battery, but similarities elsewhere made the higher price harder to swallow. The Galaxy S24 Plus breaks from that formula with a higher resolution panel, more memory, and faster charging. On first meeting I thought it felt like a proper step-up model for the first time.
- I’ll need to wait until a full review to see if Samsung’s focus on AI makes any difference in daily use, and whether the return to Exynos silicon has had any negative impact on battery life. Camera image quality will be crucial, too – rivals have quickly caught up on the hardware front and Samsung was content to stick with familiar sensors for 2024
- That said, even at this early stage I think those wanting a big-screen handset that looks and feels like a true flagship probably won’t be disappointed.
